Khardung La, Ladakh, India

Khardung La, Ladakh, India

The Khardung Pass (la means pass in Tibetan) is one of the world's highest motor-able mountain passes at 5,460 m above sea level. The pass on the Ladakh Range lies north of Leh and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. It was built in 1976, and it was opened to motor vehicles in 1988. Historically, Khardong La was also very important as it lies right on the major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Chinese Central Asia.
