Blood Church, Sankt Petersborg, Russia

Blood Church, Sankt Petersborg, Russia

This marvelous Russian-style church was built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in March 1881. Built in 1883-1907 by the architect Parland, this church was designed in the spirit of 16th-17th century Russian architecture and resembles St. Basil's Cathedral in the Red Square in Moscow. Both inside and outside the church is decorated with unique mosaics whose surface was left unpolished so that they could better reflect sunlight. In the Soviet days, communist party leaders considered demolishing it. The Church was re-opened to the public after prolonged restoration in 1997.
