The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Duomo, is the cathedral of Florence. Its construction began in 1296 and was completed in 1436.
The cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the Historic Centre of Florence. It is one of Italy's largest churches, and until the modern era, the dome was one of the largest in the world, being surpassed in width only by that of the Pantheon in Rome. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.
