
L'Abbaye de Gellone or L'Abbaye de Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of the oldest monestaries arround. It was founded in 804 by Guillaume d'Orange, the legendary courtier of Charlemagne who defeated the Saracens at Orange (b.742-812), was also known by the name of Guillaume de Gellone.
