Elevador Lacerda, Salvador, Brazil

The Lacerda Elevator - named after its builder Augusto Frederico de Lacerda who completed the first version in 1873 - connects the lower town with the upper town (Cidade Alta and Cidade Baixa), and is located just next to Mercado Modelo. The elevators were restored in Art Deco style in 1930 and travel along a set of 72 m vertical cement shafts in about 20 seconds, shuttling more than 50,000 passengers daily.
