This beautiful and opulent church was built between 1760 and 1765 and contains a large organ with gold plated pipes. It is supposedly the only baroque church in Brazil with a bell tower at its backside. According to the legend, this was done to make sure that Chica da Silva – a mistress and former slave of diamond contractor João Fernandes de Oliveira who financed the construction – would not awake by the tolling of the bells.
